About COVID-19

COVID-19 is a type of coronavirus caused by SARS-CoV-2. It is highly infectious, spreading via airborne particles and droplets. A few common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, chills, cough, fatigue, loss of smell or taste, and shortness of breath.

The severity of COVID-19 varies from person to person but older people and those with underlying conditions, such as diabetes, asthma, obesity, and heart disease are most at risk. COVID-19 primarily affects the lungs, however, it can damage other organs in the body, such as the heart, brain, and even the penis.

About Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or keep a penile erection firm enough to engage in sex. Many men across the world suffer from erectile dysfunction, however, the condition is most common in those aged 40 and above. Certain medications, underlying conditions, stress, and even viruses, such as COVID-19, can lead to erectile dysfunction in men.

How Does COVID-19 Cause Erectile Dysfunction?

So what is the connection between COVID and erectile dysfunction? Small studies have found that COVID-19 damages the blood vessels in the penis, resulting in restricted blood flow leading to severe erectile dysfunction six to eight months after infection.

When examining the penile tissue of two men who were experiencing erectile dysfunction, researchers found lingering coronavirus particles. One of the men had a severe case of COVID-19 resulting in hospitalization, although he did not have any underlying conditions.

The second man endured only a mild case of COVID-19, although he did experience high blood pressure and clogged arteries before becoming infected.

In addition to COVID-19 particles in their penile tissue, both of these men showed evidence of endothelial dysfunction, a condition in which the linings of small blood vessels are unable to provide adequate blood supply to areas of the body. In the long run, this can result in major health concerns across multiple body systems.
